Questions people ask

Why do farm eggs cost more than the supermarket?

Because a few hundred hens on grass cost more per egg than a few hundred thousand indoors, and small sellers buy feed at retail prices. Listings here that state a price run $3–$16.50 a dozen. A backyard seller with surplus is often the cheapest option going; a certified-organic, soy-free pastured farm is usually the dearest.

Do farm fresh eggs need refrigerating?

It depends on whether they were washed. Washing strips the cuticle, the natural coating on the shell, and washed eggs need to go in the fridge. Unwashed eggs keep on a counter for a good while in a cool kitchen — but once you refrigerate them, keep them there. Ask the seller which you're getting; plenty deliberately don't wash.

Are these listings checked?

Can I sell eggs from my backyard flock?

In most of the US, selling a modest number of your own eggs from home or at a market is allowed under a small-producer exemption, but the thresholds and carton rules genuinely differ state to state. We wrote up what to check before you put a sign out.
